Quanta & photonics
Quanta are the smallest, discrete units of a physical quantity and gave the quantum theory its name. Various physical quantities turn out to be quantised, such as energy, spin, fields, magnetic flux, etc. All these quantities can only assume discrete states. All of these quantities can only assume discrete states, i.e. they can only draw from a range of values of numbers that is not arbitrary, but only allows certain multiples of a fundamental unit. This unit is the quantum.
New technologies based on quantum physics open up fascinating possibilities: super-fast computers, tap-proof communication, ultra-sensitive sensors. Quantum technologies are closely linked to photonics and are often based on optical technologies.
