Quantum Inside Bundesdruckerei: A Practical Approach
With its security expertise, Bundesdruckerei GmbH is strengthening the digital sovereignty of Germany and the EU. In the Qu-Gov project, it is researching quantum communication, QKD and hybrid systems with partners in order to ensure secure communication in the quantum age.
The Bundesdruckerei GmbH, as a German federal technology company, focusses on identification systems and solutions relating cybersecurity and digitalisation. With its security expertise, the Bundesdruckerei contributes to the digital sovereignty of Germany and the European Union also concerning future technologies such as quantum computing and quantum communication.
In the past years, as part of the BMF-funded project Qu-Gov, we laid the foundation of a future-proof secure communication infrastructure within our company and beyond. Working closely with research institutions and universities on fundamental topics regarding quantum information processing and concepts of use-cases in a future quantum internet. Furthermore, with industry partners, we established a QKD-testbed working on expansions beyond single point-to-point connections. Here, we focus on the analysis and testing of future applications in a governmental context. As a company with special focus on security and trust, the Bundesdruckerei together with leading institutions and industries is working on an analysis and clarification of remaining security constraints regarding QKD. Additionally, hybrid systems including post-quantum algorithms are investigated addressing the need for a secure communication in the quantum era now and in the future.
In general, regarding future security and trustfulness, it is important to combine knowledge and technologies to investigate the risks and the benefits and thus unlock the full potential of future and innovative technologies.
